The History of Huntington's Disease
In the 1930s, US researchers began tracing family records from affected families. They called for them to be forcibly sterilised so as to avoid passing condition onwards. But in fact, Vessie's tale of enchanted ancestors turned out to be misleading. The actual gene known as Huntington had been identified and sequenced by 1993. It quickly became obvious that in people with the disease-causing version of the gene, a short section of DNA was repeated over and over,. far more times than in the healthy version. Fewer than 35 C, A, G repeats and you won't get it. Between 36 and 39, you might be lucky or you might not. More than 40 repeats lead
