The History of Linguistic Comparative Grammar

The third period began when it was discovered that languages could be compared with one another. In 18 16, in a work entitled the san i conjugation system, franz bop studied the connections between sanscrit, germanic, greek, latin et cetera. It is doubtful whether fak would have been able to inaugurate his science, or at least inaugurate it so quickly, without the discovery of sanscrit. Sanscrit as a third source of evidence besides greek and latin provided a broader and sounder basis for study.
