The Origins of Aphrodite's Transidentity
The goddess aphrodite has her roots in the ancient near eastern goddess of love, known at different times as astarte ishtar and inana. She was worshipped in places including ancient babylon, assyria and sumeria going back thousands of years. Her priestesses were people we might recognize to day as transgender women. The first poet whose name was recorded was a woman, probably a sisgender woman. We go over that in more detail in our episode on the cult of aphrodite.
