CHAPTER

Acetaminophen Overdose

acetaminophen is one of the most common causes of acute liver failure here in the US even though in places around the world hepatitis might be more common. We think about using NAC to treat acetaminophen overdose or when you have concerns for that. It can safely and effectively reverse acetaminophen poisoning if offered within a narrow enough time window after an ingestion has occurred. Typically that time window is about eight hours so that those individuals who can get NAPQ within eight hours of the ingestion essentially can achieve complete prevention of significant hepatotoxicity. That benefit continues likely out to as long as 72 hours post ingestion.
