The Development of Language and the Development of Consciousness
The development of language and the development of consciousness, not of reason but merely the way reason enters consciousness, go hand in hand. We can only really subject a drive to logical scrutiny when we manage to formulate its propositions in the language which would certainly be an interesting topic. But Nietzsche's point here is simply to say that reasoning is going on within your body, in your instincts, even if you don't perceive it. Reason is contained in judgments you make and in the valuations you have.
