Todd VanDerWerff grew up in Chicago and went to Columbia College. His first job was a guest star role on the TV version of 12 monkeys. The showrunner who would go on to run Star Trek, terry metallis, knew him as captain stashwick before he became Captain Liam Shaw. He says that his career has been shaped by being able to do both genres: sci-fi and supernatural.
