Historiansplaining: A historian tells you why everything you know is wrong
The Attack on Lindisfarne by Al-Qun of York
The attack on Lindisfarne became infamous not only as an act of violence or destruction but specifically as a pagan desecration of a Christian site. This was used for centuries as a sort of touchstone a set piece of this essential conflict between Christianity and paganism. A gravestone marker has been found on the island dating from the 800s maybe a few decades or so after the raid. It shows what seemed to be berserkers viking warriors swinging swords and axes over their heads.
