Solon is credited with establishing the foundations of Athenian democracy. Solon's reforms, which enfranchise the clients by giving them lands and by freeing them from the looming threat of servitude, in doing this Solon violated religious law. He abandoned the previous dogmas by which the boundary stones signified the power of the gods; he rips up the boundary stones and thus breaks the old laws.
