The Origins of Use Inspired Research

The roots here are in arguments about scientific funding, which is not generally where I think a lot of great thinking occurs. In the tradition of Thomas Kuhn, who was a philosopher of science and had a theory of how breakthroughs proceeded. And this is Donald Stokes' quadrants of research. So, Pasteur is in the upper right quadrant. We haven't talked about the upper left, the lower right or the lower left yet.
