In europe, for example, people washed their hands and faces every day. There were bath houses where people could go soaked together in a big wooden tub. The vats of water reminded people in england of stew, like the food. So there they called the bath houses the stews. But it wasn't really about getting clean. It was more like an activity to do with other people. Bath tubs were more like bath clubs.
