As wood became scarce, peasants started doing things like burning their doors and furniture. They would even raid cemeteries that were decades or centuries old to pull up coffins from that time so that they could burn it. This resulted in the loss of somewhere around 10% of all of the forest in China over this time was destroyed. The metal part of this is even worse. It's going to get significantly worse. I think it's really bad.
The Great Leap Forward of the People's Republic of China was an economic and social campaign led by the Chinese Communist Party from 1958 to 1962. CCP Chairman Mao Zedong launched the campaign to reconstruct the country from an agrarian economy into a communist society through the formation of people's communes. Instead it would result in the death of millions.
