"I remember looking over the horizon as a sun setting on New York, and there's sort of dead silence," he says. "And I was like, well, isn't there a lot of people downstairs protesting Occupy Wall Street? Like, is it really like a offer debate at this point?" The 2008 financial crisis proved that we need a new model for investing in real estate, Nussbaum says. He started Fundrise to raise money by raising funds online through an app called Corp Fin. It raised $300,000 from 300 people but ended up costing him more than $1 million per company.
