The Ratio and the Intellectus
The intellectus is where we receptively engage the world with contemplation. For the Middle Ages and for the old classical tradition, this was considered the higher of the two sides of reason. The common metaphor that's used is you are observing something and taking it in like a landscape. We actually have a student who, her whole family, they run a bee empire. So she'll have to ask if there's different tastes.
