When Fitzgerald died in 1940, he was widely considered to have been a failure who had started well with a novel called This Side of Paradise. And then he struggled for nine years to write another novel. He used to supplement his income by writing stories for the Saturday Evening Post which were thought to be awful, dreadful, commercial nonsense.
