What's the Greatest Lesson From the Commonwealth and Protectorate?

The Commonwealth and Protectorate, England's Republic, was perhaps the single most radical piece of constitutional change over centuries. Are there structural elements of its failure that have any significance to our constitutional debates of today? I think if there's a great moral or great lesson from the story of the mid-17th century, it's how important it is to work out what it is you want instead before rejecting one form of constitutional arrangement.
