Hedge funds that were planning to short sell the game stop stock. Now, if the price of the stock goes up instead of down, well, you then have to spend more money to purchase the shares back than you made when you sold the shares in the first place. So what these folks did was they just started buying up sheares of game stop, like lots of shares. And that activity drove up the stock price because there was a demand for game stop stock so the price went up.
