What Makes the Pen and Tellers Cups and Balls Trick Special?

A paper we wrote with teller from, from the famous magician, du pennan teller. One of his fundamental tricks is the signature pen and teller cups and balls trick. And so he felt that the falling of the ball was a very powerful draw for attention. But one of the things we discovered doing this experiment was that when he picked up the ball and put it on the table, that that actually drew people attention even more than a falling ball. So yet, through the experimental process, we've actually affected the way that magicians think about what they're doing with their hands in a way that could potentially add to and enhance magic.
