The Origins of Saffron
Saffron was introduced to England in 1339 from Tripoli by a pilgrim who had a stolen bulb in the hollow of his staff. Its main use was to colour pastry and confectionery. A Saffron field is not in full bearing until the end of the second year. At 150,000 flowers are required to produce two pounds of fresh pistols,. when dried are reduced to one-fifth of that weight. The cultivation of the Crocus for Saffron in England has entirely died out.
