The news had slowly and subtly and devastatingly taken over their lives, almost as if they had a magic newspaper in their pocket that up dated throughout the day to inform them of new events. Luke is not commending this, but he's tacitly criticising it and warning us against it. Perhaps, like me, you grew up assuming, or maybe you still assume, that keeping up with the daily news is a good, respectable, even virtuous habit. Responsible people diligently apply themselves to expend daily effort to stay informed of the news,. especially christians and pastors.
