Gaius Marius and Sulla

Gaius Marius, the Roman consul in Numidia, sends Sulla to Mauritania. King Bocas of Mauritania was Girtha's father-in-law and his most important ally. If Marius could only bring Bocas over to the Roman side, perhaps even to betray his kinsmen. A few months later, after Bocas returns West to his kingdom, he sends ambassadors to Rome. And so Bocas's ambassadors go and they return to Africa with the response of the Senate. The Senate says, the Roman people will be happy to forgive Bocas’s sins against them and have him as an ally as soon as he
