The Role of a Public Defender in the Criminal Justice System
Gideon's promise was my first opportunity to be trained in an environment that did not, which is an organization that focuses on training public defender specifically. I still maintain the Gideon's promise lawyers are some of the best criminal defense lawyers I've ever seen. My policy work at Southern Center seeks to address things that public defender offices may not be able to address on their own because of the limitations of crushing case loads and other things. But I do believe public defenders must be anti racist. If they really want to work within a system that is not perpetuating harm against people who have already been harmed so severely through our country's history.
