As a medical student, Nora Ehrlich knew she wanted to do research. She met Julian Viariel who was trying to understand the mechanisms that account for tolerance and withdrawal of opioids. He introduced her to quantitative analysis in ways "beyond the traditional statistical methods" The two men are now working together at Johns Hopkins University's Center for Neuroimaging.

Nora D. Volkow, MD, is Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) at the National Institutes of Health. She has also made important contributions to the neurobiology of obesity, ADHD, and aging.
