The Dissolution of the Oedipus Complex

The term Oedipus complex first appears in Freud's writings 10 years later. It refers to the primacy of the genitals at a certain stage of development. This is what we're going to come to call the phallic stage or which coincides with the edible period, usually around ages three through five. The antithesis here is between having a male genital and being castrated. There's no sense of the identification yet of castration with femininity.
