Having mental stress became a marker of being middle class, keying into the conformist culture of the post war. But unlike neurasthenia, anxiety could be treated with a little pill. Therapes were designed to make women more womanly and men more manly. Aswear mitchell's rest cure required that women lie in bed without any stimulation at all. It forced women into an extreme and extremely distressing form of domesticity. The experienced thramatized charlotte perkins gilman so significantly she tannelled her experience into the disturbing short story of the yellow wall paper.
