Bitcoin: A Permissionless Layer
The SegWit discount was designed in a very careful way to be as low cost, both to the user and nodes that have to store this data. It's it's hidden in this little opcode envelope that basically tells your node not to spend any time validating it. So it has very minimal validation costs on your node. And it doesn't bloat the UTXO set in some of the ways that previously arbitrary data has been stored in Bitcoin via opportune means.
