The Guilds Are Caring

The guilds were in addition responsible for the actual price fixing of a lot of goods and there were lots of goods that were deemed to be essential to everyday life. Things like bread, salt, wine and the prices were fixed by the government but basically in the process of negotiation with the guilds. And this meant that they could sell stuff at a good price much of the time but it also meant that in times of scarcity they couldn't price gouge. So they fulfill these very important economic functions and they absolutely dominate the economic life of London in the middle ages.
