The Toxic Threat of Online Violence

73% of women journalists we surveyed said they had experienced online violence in the course of their work. This was really a common experience in every country that we looked at. It also is the most serious threat to press freedom and to the safety of journalists in Western liberal democracies, where physical risks are less significant. There's nothing virtual about being threatened with rape and murder. Any more so than somebody posting you a letter or knocking on your door and telling you they're going to rape you is virtual. But it's a real threat. It's an actionable threat. I'm going to get you to give us a sort of wish list of what the platforms could do to make people's lives
