In the second century a d, a greek comedy writer named lucian of samasata wrote a short novel called a true story. It's often considered one of the earliest works of science fiction. Lucian doesn't mention mars in a true story, but the fact he's got venus being colonized gests an awareness that mars and the other planets were more than just little points of light.
