A Brief History of Gauss's Early Childhood

We know lots of fragments about his early childhood. His parents were insufficiently educated to be able to remember the date of his birth. Gauss was later able to work out his own birthday from that fact. He certainly taught himself to read and write by then, so it's plausible. When gauss started school at the age of six, in his first arithmetic class, he walked up to the front with just a single number on his slate.
