Is This Really a Giant Number?
The total notional amount of over-the-counter derivatives outstanding is currently $598 trillion, up from $72 trillion in the late 1990s. The BIS chart shows that this has really gone sideways since the GFC. So it's a kind of meaningless number. It crunches down through netting because, as you say, that's notional exposure anyway.
