Jonathan Nolum sets up this two worlds mythos that there is the higher world which is accessed through the peripheral and the lower realm where the characters who have access to the technology are living. I haven't looked at all of the criticism on westworld but I haven't seen this commented on at all and I find this very surprising on one hand and on the other hand non-surprising because we live in very non-literal I mean non-symbolic times, he says.
