Randall Bomer: Paul Weyrich was searching for that holy grail of issues to unite evangelicals around the Republican Party. He says in 1978, five years after Roe v. Wade, it finally hit him. The number of legal abortions had begun to climb, which made some evangelicals kind of uneasier than they'd been before. This same group of people would turn radically against Jimmy Carter four years later.
