The History of the Groom Lake Spy Aircraft
Groom Lake is the location of area 51, a secret testing site for Lockheed's U2 spy plane. The aircraft was meant to evade radar detection by flying above 60,000 feet or 18 kilometers. Area 51 became alive as a test facility in 1955 during Project Aquatone. It would be where those high altitude balloons of recent news were around that altitude.
