MI5 and MI6 are descended from the Secret Service Bureau, which was set up in 1909 to keep an eye on the rise of German military power. The SOA was a secret, irregular warfare organisation whose primary goals were sabotaging subversion behind enemy lines. It was born off World War II and disbanded after World War II's end.
