The Flight of James Joyce
James Joyce inherited the late 19th century tradition of the naturalistic novel. The details of a life are themselves to be opened out so we can feel the archetypes playing under them. One of the things I found most interesting about the literature of the first half of the 20th century is that a number of authors starting out from that naturalistic tradition then went by stages into mythological thought.
