McCarthy is deeply invested in some sort of Gnostic cosmology in this book. He wasn't born into Gnosticism, he was born to the Roman Catholic Church. The world of blood meridian is a world of transgression. It's a world of fall from grace. And so these are the men we're dealing with fallen. We're dealing with the sinners. That stuff is deep in McCarthy's work.
