Is the Existence of Other Languages on the JVM Helping Java?
The JVM is there for Java and like you say, it's the lingua franca. Do you think the existence of these other languages helps or hinders traditional Java? I'm coming from kind of a biased PowerPoint being one of the professional language developers on the JVM. It helps in that we get JVM improvements for different language patterns that may never have been considered until they were available. For example, Lambdas had been wanted in Java for a long time, but until we saw people going to Scala and Ruby to get them, there wasn't a lot of energy put into it.
