All kinds of martial arts rely on both approaches or at least one of them. Sparing is the focus of combat sports, but just as much as training goal techniques with a cooperative opponent is not reality. In Muay Thai you would add elbow strikes and knee strikes and some very limited grappling. In grappling arts they usually prohibit all kinds of strikes and only allow take downs, throws and what are known as submission techniques,. joint locks and chokes.
