Gillis was doing the most masterful work on facial reconstruction at the time, but there were other surgeons working on these solutions. The patients went through multiple surgeries, certainly multiple surgeries over the course of many years, sometimes even spanning over a decade. Sometimes these men would be patched up, they would be sent back to the front, and gillis would get word that they had died. So it was incredibly frustrating, i'm sure, as as a surgeon is well, to be working on these men.
