Lebotomi didn't universally produce zombes or human vegetables. If it had, it probably wouldn't have lasted as long as it did. The earliest version was to drill holes in the skull and to use something that looked a bit like a butter knife to sweep back and forth, severing parts of the brain tissue blind.
