There were problems with offering communion to a potential criminal in a state of mortal sin, so some elaborate prayers were cooked up full of legalese loopholes. The Lord's Prayer was written and a few holy conjurings made. Earl Godwin of Wessex swore upon a corset that he had nothing to do with the death of King Edward's brother Alfred. He then took the bread, put it in his mouth, chewed, and choked to death. But where's the fun in that? With the possible, but unlikely exception of Godwin, the trial by host was meant to be a cakewalk. A cheesecake walk, even.
