This summer, Xi made his first visit to Xinjiang since the crackdown. In pictures released to the world, Uighurs are seen happily singing and dancing. State-approved Uighur culture is all that's allowed here these days. Long gone are the moving traditional folk songs of musicians such as Abdu'raheem hate. We Uighur's around the world know his music. He's kind of like their Bob Dylan. Stremming the jitar, a long-necked, too-strained lute, he sings of a woman fighting to survive in the face of death. I ask, and the shackles, she says it is on my wrist.
