When they first typeset the books, going back to manual type again, they would put all ten numbers from one to ten. And it is fairly common to put them one through ten, reading left to right. A lot of times they'll put them ten down to one. What you're looking for is the lowest number to tell you which impression you're looking at so if you see the one, it's a first impression.
