The Tyranny of Pisistratus

Pisistratus' first decree was that the people of Athens should not be alarmed or downcast, but should continue about their business. He recruited Scythians to act as bodyguards and tricked the Athenians into disarming themselves. Despite this though, his rule was moderate, not harsh; he allowed the laws of Solon to function. To many, his tyranny signaled the start of a new Athenian Golden Age.
