The Importance of Feeling Adrift in a Marriage
The story is partly about a marriage where both the husband and the wife are going through very similar types of experiences. I think what he feels in that moment is that inability to express this feeling. If these feelings to his wife because he doesn't completely understand them himself, he just feels that. Even though they're raising the children together, even though the marriage is intact and everything, there's a sense of them being on their own in a way.
