The Early Celts and the Romans

The term gauls can be a little confusing. The romans used it to refer to the people who inhabited the region of gaul, and these people were celts. But julius caesar did note that some of the celts living in gaul called themselves celti. It's possible that the early greeks and romans had each encountered the same tribe or groups of tribes which used that term to refer to themselves. So this was an ancient culture that still resembled the original indo european culture in many respects.
