The Linguistic Dilemma in Gaul
Linguists can't really establish the dividing line within any certainty until around the 13th century. Most of the Roman territory continued to speak Latin, or a local vulgar Latin dialect. The Germanic languages only encroached a few miles across the ancient borders.
