The Colfax Massacre in Louisiana
In US v. Crookshank of 1876, the court determined that state action is required for the United States government to intervene when a mob lynches a black man. The case stemmed from the infamous Colfax massacre in Louisiana. This is one of the worst cases of racial violence in American history.
