In 1649, Milton writes a tract called the tenure of kings and magistrates. He argues that any monarch or magistrate could be deposed even if not a tyrant. The book became known as the king's book; people would have two books in their parlor. In 1660, when Charles II reclaimed the throne, Milton went to prison.
