The Menominee practice of attending to everyone's needs and making sure that no one was left out was key to our survival of an apocalypse. To simply punish someone for stealing food, for example, meant that theft would likely reoccur because the conditions that led the person to steal were unchanged. Even there are more than 7 billion people in the world, even if we had some catastrophe that resulted in the death of 80% of all people, we're still looking at over a billion people left.
